She thinks community health centers, which have long had bipartisan support although haphazard funding, could provide a relatively inexpensive safety net for people without eliminating free market options. Congress missed the September 30 deadline to reauthorize funding during the 2018 budget year for community health centers, which currently serve 27 million people.

McClanahan pens articles about health care reform, which she posts to her firm’s Web site. Some of her clients read her work and follow her on social media, she says. She’s had some clients invite her to speak at organizations they belong to. “Many of our clients are physicians and they’re active in this area anyway,” she says.

She only talks about health care reform in client meetings if she’s asked about it, but clients generally don’t bring up the topic. More important, she says, “The meetings need to be about them.”
