Education causes, including schools and universities, literacy and after-school programs and libraries, are the most consistent recipients of donations from year to year. “It is no surprise that cities like Bridgeport, Conn.; Boston, and New York City, with their proximity to globally recognized universities like Harvard, Yale and New York University, make up the top three spots in the rankings,” the report said.

Grants to health-related charities, hospitals or research organizations saw a 23% year-over-year increase driven by the support for organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Association and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the report said. Boston maintained its spot at the top of the list for supporting the health sector.

Donors in the Midwest and South are inclined to give to religious organizations and St. Louis maintained its place at the top of the list in this category, followed closely by Houston and Indianapolis, which jumped five and six spots in the ranking to the second and third sports respectively, the report said.

Miami donors have long been strong supporters of the societal benefits category, which includes civil rights, community improvement, social advocacy and volunteer organizations. The metropolitan area maintained its top spot in the rankings for the fourth straight year.
